AKC’s Beginners Guide To Dog Shows

Prep Your Dog – and Yourself

Conformation classes will prepare you and your dog for your first experience – and for your best chances at winning. Classes are often conveniently held on  weeknights and focus on how to handle your dog in the show ring. Contact a local AKC Club to ask about training opportunities. 

In addition, your dog should know basic behavior like how to walk on a leash on your left side and how to stack. Your dog should also be very comfortable around other dogs. On top of taking classes, we encourage you to take many walks in busy areas with a lot of people and dogs to practice socialization skills. Finally, before your first show, your pet should be clean and nails trimmed. Do not freshly bath your Chesapeake as that will strip the oil from the coat. A good bath, if needed, should be done at least a week or more before the show and then touch up cleaning as needed.

While it might seem a like a lot to learn, don’t forget that the goal here is for you and your dog to have fun together! A competitive spirit doesn’t hurt either.

What Conformation Class Should I Enter?

Here is the breakdown of the Classes offered by the AKC. Classes for NON-CHAMPIONS earning their 15 points with 2 majors.

Regular Classes

The seven regular classes at a conformation dog show include:

  • Puppy Class: dogs at least 6 months and under 12 months of age. The club may also further divide this class into 6-9 months and 9-12 months.
  • 12-18 Month Class: dogs at least 12 months and under 18 months old. 
  • Novice Class: dogs that have not previously won 3 first places in Novice Class, a 1st place in Amateur-Owner-Handler, Bred-by-Exhibitor, American-bred, or Open Classes or who have not earned one or more points toward their championship.
  • Amateur-Owner-Handler Class: dogs handled by the registered owner who has not, at any point, been a professional dog handler, an AKC approved conformation judge or employed as an assistant to a professional handler.
  • Bred-by-Exhibitor Class: dogs handled and owned by its breeder.  The club may also further divide this class into Adult Bred-by-Exhibitor and Puppy Bred-by-Exhibitor.
  • American-bred Class: dogs whose sire and dam were mated in America and the dog was born in America. This is a required class.
  • Open Class: a required class that any dog may enter. This is the only regular class that Champions are eligible to complete in.

After a breed’s regular classes are judged, all the dogs that won first place in a class return to the ring to compete to be named Winners Dog (males) or Winners Bitch (females) and earn championship points and advance to Best of Breed judging.

Non-Regular Classes
Some dog shows may also offer non-regular classes, which are held after the regular classes are judged. Non-regular class winners are not
eligible to compete for championship points. The premium list will state which, if any, non-regular classes are offered. You’ll most likely find these classes held at specialty dog shows.
The 2023 NSS is offering non-regular Veterans, Hunting, and Field Trial Classes.
National Owner-Handled Series recognizes and celebrates owner-handler exhibitors. Owner-Handlers compete in the regular classes with the NOHS Best of Breed award given at the end of regular judging. The NOHS entry process is simple (just check the owner-handler box on your entry form) and it requires no additional fee.
Sweepstakes
Sweepstakes are a non-regular competition offered in addition to regular classes and are primarily held at specialty dog shows. If a specialty show is held in conjunction with an All-Breed or Group show, sweepstakes competition may also be offered. The show’s premium list will include all relevant information about this competition.
The 2023 NSS Sweepstakes are specifically designed to recognize outstanding puppies and young dogs (Puppy/Junior Sweeps), older dogs (VeteranSweeps), and our Hunting and Field dogs (Hunt/Field Sweeps). A separate judge is assigned to this competition. All class divisions, requirements, and conditions are established by the club. No Championship points are awarded. Winners receive a portion of the entry fees as a prize for their placements.

How to enter a Dog Show

1.      Find out who the Superintendent or Show Secretary is. For the 2023 ACC NSS this is BARAY EVENT SERVICES.

2.      Go to their website BARAYEVENTS.COM

3.      Login or make yourself an account if you do not have one by clicking “sign in/register”.

4.      If you are making an new account you can add dogs under “My Dogs”. Or you can add them when you enter a show.

5.      Click “ENTER A SHOW”

6.      Select the show you would like to enter by scrolling down and finding American Chesapeake Club. You can sort by different options to find the show easier.

7.      You may “Enter Online” or download and print the form to mail your entry. There is an extra service fee to enter online.

8.      If you enter online, you then choose a dog, or enter a new dog.

9.      Select what you are entering, there will be conformation, obedience, rally and juniors options.

10.  Start with conformation: select the class- there are many options so read through the description of all the classes we have posted to learn what you should enter.

11.  Then move onto Obedience, Rally or Juniors to finish your entries for the dog you selected.

12.  You would go through this entry process for EACH dog individually.

13.  When you are done entering your dogs you can check your entries under “My Account, My Orders”

14.  You can make changes to your entries to the shows by clicking “Cancel/Change Entry”. If the show has closed you CANNOT cancel your entry, but you can make a change like Moving A Dog Up. This means they have earned the Champion title, but they are entered in a class and they need to be “Moved Up” to the Best of Breed competition. You make the change in the comments section. You can also Move A Dog Up the day of the show by going to the superintendents desk and filling out the form and letting them know what you need so they can get this done before your ringtime. Go first thing in the morning and at least an hour before the scheduled ringtime so they have time to make the change in the judges book.
