Obedience

Obedience training is one of the best gifts you can give yourself, your family, your community, and your pet. It teaches your dog appropriate social behavior with both people and animals; helps correct annoying behaviors like jumping, digging, barking, and chewing; and keeps your dog entertained and happy.

The American Chesapeake Club’s 2023 National Specialty Show is a great place to get started or continue your journey through AKC obedience. There are prizes for all placements and who knows? Maybe your Novice A dog will be the highest scoring dog in trial!

If you’re just beginning, start taking classes at your local AKC club or with a private trainer and practice, practice, practice! Chessies get bored easily. It’s important to practice regularly and frequently; sessions should be short and interspersed with playtime and rewards.

The ACC’s 2023 NSS is limited to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers only, but the Great Salt Lake Dog Training Club’s obedience and rally trials (Friday through Sunday at the Bastian Agricultural Center) are open to all breeds, so feel free to bring your other pets and support those trials!

To compete in the ACC 2023 NSS Obedience Trials, your dog must:

  • Be 6 months of age on Wednesday, September 13, 2023
  • Be physically sound
  • Have an AKC number via one of the following:
    • AKC Registration as a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, OR
    • AKC Canine Partners, which is for mixed-breed dogs and dogs ineligible for AKC registration (often, rescue CBRs).
  • Spayed females and neutered males are eligible to participate but females in season are not.
  • Dogs that are blind are not eligible to participate.
  • No dog can compete if it is taped or bandaged or in any way has anything attached to it for medical purposes.

The ACC 2023 NSS will offer several Obedience classes on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Once the show closes, only those classes that have entries will be eligible for dogs who have already finished their titles to move into, so be sure to consider where you’re at in your Obedience journey when you enter the NSS!

The dogs need not be owned by the same person but will be handled by one handler. Dogs may be shown unattached or coupled. Whichever method is used will be continued throughout all exercises. A separate official entry form will be completed in full for each dog entered. Exercises, performances, and judging will be as in the Novice class. The brace should always work in unison.
  • Obedience Teams – The Team class will be for teams of any four dogs that are eligible under these regulations. Five dogs may be entered, one to be considered an alternate for which no entry fee will be required. However, the same four dogs will perform all exercises. There will be two judges, one of whom will call orders while the other scores the team’s performance. The teams will be judged one at a time, except for the group exercises. Dogs may be handled by the owner or any other person and need not have obedience titles. A separate official entry form will be completed in full for each dog entered. No dog may be entered on more than one team. The handlers and dogs are encouraged to wear costuming that is in good taste.
  • Obedience Veterans – The Veterans class will be for dogs that have an obedience title and are at least eight (8) years old on the date of the trial. The exercises will be performed and judged as in the Novice class.
