The ACC’s 2023 NSS is limited to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers only, but the Great Salt Lake Dog Training Club’s obedience and rally trials (Friday through Sunday at the Bastian Agricultural Center) are open to all breeds, so feel free to bring your other pets and support those trials!

To compete in the ACC 2023 NSS Rally Trials, your dog must:

  • Be 6 months of age on Wednesday, September 13, 2023
  • Be physically sound
  • Have an AKC number via one of the following:
    • AKC Registration as a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, OR
    • AKC Canine Partners, which is for mixed-breed dogs or purebred dogs ineligible for AKC registration (e.g., rescue CBRs).
  • Spayed females and neutered males are eligible to participate but females in season are not.
  • Dogs that are deaf are permitted to exhibit, but dogs that are blind are not eligible to participate.
  • No dog can compete if it is taped or bandaged or in any way has anything attached to it for medical purposes.

The ACC 2023 NSS will offer several Rally Classes on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Once the show closes, only those classes that have entries will be eligible for dogs who have already finished their titles to move into, so be sure to consider where you’re at in your Rally journey when you enter the NSS!

The Regular Rally Classes include:

  • Novice (A or B). All exercises are performed with your dog on-leash. There are 10-15 signs from a list of 42 different exercises (#1-42). You can pat your legs and clap your hands to encourage your dog throughout this level.
  • Advanced (A or B). All exercises are performed with your dog off-leash. There are 12-17 signs chosen from a list of 65 exercises (23 Advanced and 42 Novice), including one jump. You can pat your legs and clap your hands to encourage your dog throughout this level.
  • Excellent (A or B). All exercises are performed with your dog off-leash. There are 15-20 signs chosen from a list of 81 exercises (16 Excellent, 23 Advanced, and 42 Novice), including two jumps and a Sit-Stay-Get Your Leash at the end of the course. At this level, you are no longer permitted to pat your legs and clap your hands to encourage your dog, but you can cheer your dog along and give commands as much as you want.
  • Master. Master is the highest level of competition. The course is similar to the Excellent level (above), but with some more challenging exercises. All exercises are performed with your dog off-leash. There are 15-20 signs chosen from a list of 103 exercises (22 Master, 16 Excellent, 23 Advanced, and 42 Novice), including one jump. At this level, you are not permitted to pat your legs or clap your hands, but you can cheer your dog along and give commands as much as you want.
  •

Optional Rally Classes include:

  • Intermediate. The Intermediate class is for dogs that might be ready for the Advanced Class but may lack confidence working off-leash. All exercises are performed with your dog on-leash. Like the Advanced class, there are 12-17 signs on the course, chosen from a list of 65 exercises (23 Advanced and 42 Novice), except that there is no jump. You can pat your legs and clap your hands to encourage your dog throughout this level.
  • Choice. The Rally Choice class is available for all dogs to enter. Verbal encouragement, multiple commands, and/or inaudible signals are allowed, but penalties will be assessed for handlers clapping their hands, patting their legs, touching the dog, or any physical corrections. The Rally Choice course will have 15 to 20 signs with a minimum of three and a maximum of seven stationary signs. Courses will have a minimum of four Master level signs, a minimum of three Excellent level signs, and a minimum of three Advanced level signs. There are no jumps in this class and all signs are judged off-leash. Essentially, the Choice course is the same as the Master course without the jump.

Other (fun) non-regular Rally Classes being offered at the 2023 NSS include:

  • Rally Teams (Novice). For the Rally Team Competition, any of the regular rally class levels may be offered. The Rally Team Competition will be four teams of any four dogs that are eligible under the AKC Rally Regulations. Five dogs may be entered, one to be considered an alternate for which no entry fee will be required; however, the same four dogs will perform all of the signs. No dog may be entered on more than one team. There is a total possible score of 400 points for each team of four dogs/handlers (100 points per dog/handler). All team members will run the course individually, with the team time running continuously. Time will start when the judge gives the first member of the team the forward command from the “Start” sign. The subsequent dog for each team starts when the previous handler for the team passes the “Finish” sign without an additional command of “Forward” by the judge. Timing for each team will begin when the judge commands the first handler in the team to begin with the command “Forward” and will stop when the fourth handler from the team passes the finish sign. If jumps are required, they will be based on the height of the smallest dog on each competing team.
  • Rally Two-Step Relay (Novice through Master). The Rally Two-Step Relay is a special attraction class designed to showcase teams at the top levels of AKC Rally. All Rally signs may be used, from Novice through Master, except for the Sit Stay and jumps. The Rally Two-Step Relay premiered at the 2022 Eukanuba Classic in Orlando, Florida with more than 30 entries. The course is designed for two team members to complete together. Each team member will carry a toy with them, provided by the ACC. Dogs will perform off leash and costumes in good taste are encouraged. Team 2 will be positioned approximately ½ way on the course from the start, while Team 1 is at the Start sign. Team 1 will perform a series of signs individually. Once Team 1 reaches Team 2, the toys will be exchanged and the two teams will perform the next sign together, side-by-side. Synchronization is not required! Team 2 will continue to complete the second half of the course until Team 2 meets Team 1 at the last sign, where the toys are exchanged again, and the two teams complete the final sign and then cross the finish line together. The toy may be carried in hand but may not be used as a lure. The dogs must remain under control and each handler may pet or play with their dog while waiting to join their other team member. The team of two dogs and two handlers will be scored as per a normal rally trial (100 points) and will be timed.
